E-Verify Is Becoming A Standard For Employment Screening

While the practice of I-9 Certification is not new, the use of The Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify system has become increasingly utilized in the past several years.  E-Verify is an internet based, free program run by the Department of Homeland Security that compares information from an employee’s I-9 to data from U.S. government records.

What is seemingly overlooked is that fact that 10 other states have policies in place for companies to utilize or to begin to utilize E-Verify within the next couple of years.  Mississippi, Rhode Island, South Carolina are currently requiring E-Verify to be used for all levels of business, both private and public.  Georgia’s model puts this in to practice for all types of business by 2013.  Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah and Missouri currently require all public employees or contractors to be verified through E-Verify.
